Welcome to the Volunteer South East Asia Wiki.

This is a forum and network for disseminating and sharing information about volunteering opportunities at a grassroots level in the countries of South East Asia.

In this context, grassroots implies small-scale initiatives which have been established to directly aid the local people.

Therefore, this will be a place for advertising and promoting independent organizations who are simply grateful to have you offer your time and energy, don't necessarily require you to have any specific skills and talents, and don't cost you more to work for than you might otherwise expect to pay for your accommodation and food in any event.

This site is intended to supplement - rather than duplicate - volunteering avenues which are only primarily accessible through fee-charging 'voluntourism' organizations or via specialist intakes administered by NGOs in a volunteer's country of origin.

For ethical travellers who have already striven to make a social contribution to the countries they visit, for they who might wish to do so, and for the small community-based projects who would welcome their help...let's make it happen!

Initially, we will be accepting and compiling information about volunteering opportunities in the following mainland nations of ASEAN: Burma, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand .

However, this should not be seen to preclude the sharing of information for the remaining countries of the region via the Community Portal: Volunteer South East Asia Wiki talk:Community Portal. This information will later be incorporated into the content of the wiki as the site continues to grow.

NOTICE:

There will be a temporary hiatus in progress on the Volunteer South East Asia wiki site whilst I spend nine works travelling in Northern Thailand, North and South Laos, and Vietnam. Hopefully, I'll get to visit some of the organizations already listed. Obviously, the site has still got a long way to go and I've certainly got a lot of organizations on file awaiting entry. It's a slow and painstaking process but there should be more flesh on the bones by the end of the year. In the meantime, relevant posts on the wiki forum would be greatly appreciated.
